The gut-brain axis is a bidirectional link between the gut and the brain through the vagus nerve. What happens in the gut directly influences brain function and behavior. Similarly, the brain influences intestinal function. In addition to communication through the vagus nerve the gut and brain communicate through chemical messengers, gut hormones, neurotransmitters, the immune, nervous, and endocrine systems. Many of the hormones and neurotransmitters are made in the gut. Heathy microbiome is essential for proper communication. The gut-brain axis primarily combines sympathetic and parasympathetic arms of the autonomic nervous system. It is the link between the central nervous system, and the enteric nervous system. Alterations in the gut microbiota can affect neurochemistry impacting several functions of the brain: cognition, social behavior, stress response, emotional regulation, mood, pain, and executive function (Adães, 2019).
